YouTube SEO Guide for Beginners
Build a simple search strategy around intent, relevance, retention, and genuinely useful metadata.

Start with viewer intent
YouTube search is not a form-filling contest. It is an attempt to match a viewer’s question with the video most likely to satisfy it.
Choose one primary search intent per video. Make the title natural, answer the question early, and use the description to clarify the scope.
Optimize the parts that matter
Give the platform and the viewer consistent signals.
- Use the primary phrase naturally in the title
- Write the first two description lines for humans
- Say the core topic clearly in the video
- Add accurate chapters when the format benefits from them
- Prioritize retention over metadata volume
Measure satisfaction, not just ranking
A ranking that produces poor retention is not a durable win. Watch click-through rate alongside average view duration and returning viewers to understand whether the promise and experience align.
